In Luxembourg, there is an unknown number of people with an intellectual disability. Our ambition is to allow as many of these people as possible to experience the joy of sport. By increasing the number of sporting events, we also want to change the way society views this part of the population that is too often ignored.
Special Olympics is the first organization dedicated to the development through sport of people living with intellectual disabilities. The Special Olympics movement was created in the United States in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy-Shriver, sister of President John F. Kennedy. Active in more than 190 countries, Special Olympics benefits from the recognition of the IOC (International Olympic Committee).
The ambition of Special Olympics Luxembourg is to enable children, adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities to experience the joys of sport. By organizing sporting events open to all, the objective is to change society's vision towards these people. Sport is a fantastic vector of development and social recognition. It develops self-esteem, confidence, courage. It creates moments of sharing.
Special Olympics offers sports practice to everyone, without elitism and without performance criteria. Everyone, according to their desires and abilities, has the opportunity to participate in numerous weekly training sessions and subsequently in sporting events.
The Special Olympics philosophy is best exemplified by its athletes' oath:
“Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me brave in the attempt.”
