The goal is to preserve an old mining gallery as well as original iron mining equipment in working condition, in order to make it accessible to interested members of the public, but also to preserve and pass on the know-how and history related to mining.
Minièresbunn: Preserving Luxembourg’s Mining Heritage and Bringing it to Life for the Public
The Minièresbunn is part of a project dedicated to safeguarding Luxembourg's industrial past, particularly its mining history, by making it accessible to the public through the use of original equipment.
The main objective is to preserve and pass on the techniques used in iron ore extraction, the working conditions of the miners, and the use of authentic mining equipment, which is kept in working order. Special attention is given to the accurate reconstruction of these elements within their historical context.
Since its founding in 1990, the collection of locomotives has grown from 2 to 51, all sourced from former mines. All types of traction are represented: steam, diesel, and electric. The railway network now stretches over 6 km, including 1.4 km underground in the mine and 1.5 km on French territory.
Each season, between 7,000 and 9,000 visitors are welcomed. The operation and maintenance of all locomotives and infrastructure are handled entirely by a dedicated team of passionate volunteers.
Open every Sunday and public holiday from May 1st until the last weekend of September, the railway can be explored aboard trains hauled by original mining locomotives, with a self-guided tour of the mine available. Special trains can also be booked, including a guided tour with demonstrations of historical mining tools. More details can be found on our website: www.minieresbunn.lu.
Preserving the original appearance of the equipment and facilities is one of our top priorities. To keep this rolling heritage operational, the skills of former miners are not only preserved but actively passed on within the team, ensuring that these living witnesses to industrial history are maintained for future generations.
The current network stretches over 6 kilometers and is operated every Sunday and public holiday between May and September.
All trains are hauled by historic locomotives originally used in the mines.
Inside the mine, visitors can explore an exhibition that shows how iron ore was extracted during the mining era.
