Founded in May 2021 in Luxembourg, What Water is a non-profit organization that builds bridges between Europe, the Americas, and Central Africa. Its mission is simple yet universal: to make water accessible to all, while placing culture and civic engagement at the heart of this effort.
What Water pursues a dual objective. On one hand, it aims to raise awareness about fundamental human rights, using culture as a powerful means of communication. On the other, it seeks to raise funds to support concrete field actions, particularly projects that facilitate access to clean water in communities that need it most.
The organization operates through an innovative partnership model with local municipalities: for every euro invested by What Water, partner municipalities contribute an equivalent amount in joint projects. This co-funding approach amplifies the impact of each initiative and strengthens cooperation between public, private, and community actors.
Convinced that access to safe drinking water is a key driver of rural economic and social development, What Water has set an ambitious goal: to provide clean water to 8 million people by 2030. This commitment aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal 6 (“Clean Water and Sanitation”) and Goal 17 (“Partnerships for the Goals”).
What Water’s projects are financed through a dynamic network of institutions, businesses, and committed artists. In addition, the promotion and sale of artworks serve as an alternative source of funding: 50% of each sale’s proceeds go directly to the collective of participating artists, supporting a solidary and creative economy.
Through this unique approach, What Water demonstrates that art, cooperation, and global solidarity can come together to tackle one of the most urgent challenges of our time: ensuring universal and sustainable access to water.
