Presentation of the opportunity for volunteering

Do you enjoy telling stories to children?

Are you 50 or older and would like to introduce children to stories in your native language?
Join us as a volunteer storyteller in the "Tell Me a Story" project!

This initiative gives seniors the opportunity to be grandparents for a day—especially for children whose grandparents live far away. Storytelling creates a special connection between storytellers and their young audience while introducing new languages and sounds, without excluding Luxembourgish.

Parents and grandparents know how much children love listening to stories—they spark imagination, enhance listening skills, and improve comprehension. Children develop their ability to express themselves, learn to pay attention, and discover a language different from their own. This naturally nurtures their curiosity about other cultures and intercultural exchange.

Currently, we offer readings in French, Italian, Luxembourgish, German, and Dutch—but all languages are welcome!

A dedicated GERO coordinator supports the project
GERO manages and coordinates the entire initiative. The senior volunteers receive guidance throughout their involvement—some may even explore storytelling as a new leisure activity. GERO also establishes partnerships with interested schools.

Throughout their participation, volunteers are supported by a GERO staff member who is available to answer questions, accompany them to schools when needed, and even tell stories herself.

Free storytelling workshops and training offered by GERO
Telling a story in front of an audience requires concentration, as well as good voice control and breathing techniques. For young listeners, storytelling also involves performance skills—especially when reading in a foreign language.

To help volunteers engage children in an exciting and captivating way, we offer training and workshops that provide storytelling tools and techniques to adapt to the children’s needs.

Regular social meetups for volunteer storytellers at GERO
GERO also organizes quarterly meetups for the volunteer storytellers. These gatherings, held over coffee, provide an opportunity for socializing, sharing experiences, exchanging ideas and advice, and collectively shaping the project.

"Tell Me a Story" is meant to be a collaborative initiative, where every volunteer can contribute ideas and suggestions as long as they foster intergenerational and intercultural connections through children's literature.
